Chocolate Dipped Orange Peels

This is my recipe for Holiday Candied Orange Peels Dipped in Dark Chocolate. This is one of my personal favorites for a sweet Passover treat. It is also naturally gluten/dairy free and I have used the Enjoy life dark chocolate chunks which are not only gluten and dairy free but soy free as well. These sweet treats are so tasty, so addicting, so utterly delectable, you just might forget that you originally fell in love with the insides of oranges. Serve them as a snack, a sweet appetizer, a simple side with coffee, as a garnish on a slice of cake, or any way you like! You may want to double this recipe as I promise these will go fast!

Chocolate Dipped Orange Peels

Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 4 large oranges
  • 1 cup water
  • pot of water for blanching the peels
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 16 ounces dark chocolate chunks or chips Note: I used the Enjoy life brand which is gluten, soy and dairy free
  • grated orange peel for garnishing

Preparation:
  1. Slice the the tops and bottoms off the oranges, score them from one end to the other, and then peel the oranges so that the peels come off in one piece. Slice the peels into thin strips and trim the edges if needed.
  2. In a medium pot, bring water to a boil and then blanch the orange peels in the boiling water for a few minutes. Drain and rinse the peels and repeat the blanching process a second time. Blanching the peels twice removes the bitterness.
  3. In a saucepan, combine the 1 cup of water with the sugar and bring to a simmer. Add the peels to the simple syrup, cover the pot, and simmer for 1 hour. Check it every so often and give it a stir to make sure all the peels are submerged. Once cooked, transfer the peels to a rack to cool and drain
  4. Melt the dark chocolate either on the stovetop or in the microwave. Dip each of the candied orange peels into the dark chocolate and then place them on parchment paper. If desired, sprinkle with grated orange peel. Once the chocolate has hardened, store in an airtight container.
Note: Lemons work well too, but have a slightly more tart taste.
