GF/DF/Grain Free Applesauce Cake

Apple picking has become a Fall ritual in our house and along with the abundance of apples we bring home from the orchard comes an array of delicious and tasty recipes. My husband does not believe in wasting, so it is imperative that I try to use all the apples before they begin to go bad. This particular recipe is for a grain free, gluten and dairy free Applesauce Cake, which has become a household favorite and is made with almond flour. The best part of this cake is that it is really moist because it has 1 1/2 cups of applesauce in it. I love this cake as it makes both a great snack or dessert. Be sure to check out my other apple recipes (Homemade Apple Cider and Apple, Pear, Spinach Salad). Need to use up a whole lot of apples!

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups homemade applesauce (store bought will work as well)
  • 2 cups almond flour
  • 1 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Grease a loaf pan with coconut oil.
  3. Puree eggs, applesauce, maple syrup and oil in a blender or food processor.
  4. Whisk almond flour, baking soda, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, vanilla and salt in a large bowl. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet ingredients. Gradually stir the dry into the wet and stir until combined.
  5. Immediately spread out into the prepared pan and transfer to the oven.
  6. Bake until golden brown and the cake springs back when lightly touched, 50 to 55 minutes.
  7. Let cool in pan 10 minutes before turning out onto a cooling rack.

Additional Tips:

*To make a lighter and higher cake you may use 5 eggs and/or add additional baking soda.

  1. This looks great! I do have a question: with the Almond Flour do you not need Xanthan Gum. If you use Brown Rice Flour instead of the Almond Flour do you need to add Xanthan Gum. May the 4 eggs are holding everything together. Thanks.

  2. Hi Cindy,
I did not uses xanthan gum with the almond flour however you can add 1/2 teaspoon with the brown rice flour but the cake should come out just fine without it as well. The eggs should hold it together. Thanks for visiting and good question. Best, Phyllis

  3. Could you please list the size of the pan you used?

  4. I used a standard 9 x 5 loaf pan. Good question. Thanks for visiting!
